As we celebrate Black-Owned Business Month, we honor two remarkable pioneers who broke bariers in law: Robert Morris Sr. and Charlotte E. Ray.
Robert Morris Sr. (1823-1882) made history as one of the first Black lawyers in Massachusetts, opening his Boston office in 1847. Despite deep-rooted racial prejudice, Morris built a successful practice that showcased the capabilities of Black professionals.
His firm was both a business and a beacon of hope, fighting to desegregate Boston's schools and representing humans seeking escape from their enslavement by others.
Charlotte E. Ray (1850-1911) became the first Black woman lawyer in the
U.S., establishing her Washington D.C. office in the 1870s. Facing discrimination based on race and gender, Ray persevered, specializing in commercial law.
Her groundbreaking career opened doors for future generations of Black women in law and business.
These pioneers' stories highlight the rich history of Black entrepreneurship in law. Their legacies inspire us to continue breaking bariers and creating opportunities, carrying forward their spirit of excellence and advocacy in today's business world.
Horton Legal Strategies PLLC is a Black-owned and Woman-owned business, and certified LGBT Enterprise representing businesses in legal matters affecting their people and profits.

Think IP protection isn't urgent? Think again.
Every day without proper IP safeguards is a day your innovations are at risk.
We've seen countless cases of companies losing money because they procrastinated on patents or trademarks. ©
"But it's expensive," you say. True, but consider the cost of theft or litigation down the road. Plus, strong IP can be your ticket to funding and partnerships. Investors love seeing protected assets.
Don't wait for a wake-up call like a competitor beating you to market. By then, it's often too late. Our firm specializes in efficient, strategic IP protection that grows with your business. We'll help you prioritize what to protect now and what can wait.
Remember: your ideas are your company's lifeblood. Protect them like your business depends on it because it does.
